The popular summer pastime of swingball is the subject of a new exhibition, which is on show from 30 July - 24 September in The Gallery at Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts.
In the exhibition 'Contest', Southampton-based artist Roy Brown uses the rhythmic patterns of the childhood game of swingball to examine the nature of petty arguments. This video and sculpture installation, swings from playful to heated debate and back again.
Media staff and students from Southampton Institute assisted Roy in producing the visual element of the exhibition.
Roy enlisted his friend and collaborator Julian Hoxter, Principal Lecturer and Programme Group Leader in Media and Cultural Studies at Southampton Institute, as well as three level 2 BA (Hons) Media with Cultural Studies students- Tom Earwaker, Samantha Andrews and Tom Emptage - to produce the raw footage for the six-screen video installation. The crew spent one day filming at Lighthouse, Poole and another day in the New Forest. Julian also assisted in the construction of the installation. Capability Funding sponsored the video element and its construction and also provided money for the students.
Julian comments:
"This was a great experience for the students to be involved in a real-life project and an opportunity to network and develop useful contacts for the future."
The launch party for 'Contest' is on Friday, 29 July from 6-8pm and all are welcome.
On Friday, 23 September at 8pm, Roy will give a free talk about the show and his previous works. Roy has previously exhibited at Southampton Institute's Millais Gallery with his U.N.I.T show about Daleks in November and December 2002, for which Julian produced a 15-minute documentary. To book your free ticket for Roy Brown's talk, please call Lighthouse Tickets and Information on 01202 685 222.
