To help students face the challenges of the music business in the 21st century, Southampton Institute is launching an innovative BA (Hons) Multimedia Sound course from Septemer 2005.
This unique course is the first in the UK to teach DJing and VJing at an academic level, alongside digital sound production, website design and video production.
Music has become more and more digital, so students need multimedia production skills. The course gives the students empowering skills so that they can operate autonomously and have more creative independence. This means that DJs and music producers would be learning VJing and video editing so that they will be able to put together their own VJ sets, music videos or create and manage their own professionally designed websites.
The course has a very hands-on approach with students having access to cutting-edge hardware, including Apple G5s and the recently developed Technics DZ1200 digital turntable, and also a wide range of software applications including Logic 7 Pro and Native Instruments Komplete.
Bernhard Living, BA (Hons) Multimedia Sound Course Leader, comments:
"The new Multimedia Sound course is an exciting opportunity for young musicians to develop their skills and to help them realise their dream of becoming a professional DJ."
The course seeks to explore and expand upon the use and application of digital sound and music in the context of moving images. The use of sound in Multimedia Design has become increasingly important and is central to the effective communication of visual ideas."
